ENERGENCY BOX SUPPLY RECOMMENDATIONS

 

The following is a list of recommended items you may want to keep in an emergency box either at home or have with you as you travel. If you have a pet with special needs or a specific health problem, you may wish to alter your ER box as you see fit.

 

Sturdy, easily movable container-such as a tackle box, tool box, rubber mate container, tool box on wheels will do, make sure its big enough for everything you plan to put in it.

MEDICATIONS:

Diphenhydramine HCL (Benadryl) 25 mg                     Buffered Aspirin 325 mg                   Pepto Bismol

Metronidazole (Flagyl) 500 mg                        Simethicone (Gas X) 125 mg            Clavamox 375 mg

Amoxicillin 500 mg                                             Cephalexin 500 mg

 

HANDY TRICKS OF THE VET….

Muzzles-either “pre-fab”, or use gauze, a leash or even a scarf in a pinch.

Mineral oil-can place 1-2 drops in each eye if no eye lube, ointment is available.

Ear Cleaner-works GREAT to clean up anal gland secretions and odor!

Baby Powder-use in place of Qwik Stop if a nail is bleeding.

Ice packs-use bags or frozen peas or corn

Always place a Telfa (nonstick) pad on a wound  if possible for easy removal.

Use as little tape as possible to secure a bandage due to fur…use vet wrap when you can.

Saran/plastic wrap can be placed on a leg wrap to help “waterproof” if it is raining.

Use a large bath towel or sheet as a “sling”  to support a dog’s rear or front end if needed.

E-collar- in a pinch, use a large, lightweight, plastic flower pot

Karo Syrup-for low blood sugar-pancake syrup or molasses in a pinch.

Mouth gags-use a piece of 2x4 stud with 1.5” hole removed from center or a roll of duct tape.

 

Body Tempreatures:

Normal Body Temperature-101.5 to 102.5

Get concerned body temperature greater than 103.0 or less than 99.0

 Freak out body temperature greater than 104.5 or less than 98.0

 

FASTER MED DOSES….when you can’t think or find the calculator!

                Diphenhydramine-1 tablet per 25 pounds

                Cephalexin 500mg- 1 tablet per 50 pounds

                Clavamox 375 mg-1 tablet per 50 pounds   

                Amoxicillin 500 mg-1 tablet per 50 pounds

                Metronidazole 500 mg- 1 tablet per 50 pounds

                Gas X 125 mg- 1-2 tablets

                Buffered aspirin 325 mg- 1 tablet per 75 pounds
